St. Vincent Hospital's Taking Time support group meets on the first Wednesday of the month from 6:30 to 8 P.M. in the St. Vincent Regional Cancer Center conference room in Green Bay. The support group is a place to meet others who are faced with the challenge of living with cancer. It is open to patients, family members, and friends.

Heckrodt Wetland Reserve's early childhood program series, "ToddlerTrails," meets the first and third Thursday of every month from 10 to 11 A.M. at the Heckrodt Nature Center. The program is designed for toddlers 12 to 36 months, accompanied by a parent or other adult.

Toddlers use their senses to explore their worlds every day -- touching, smelling, seeing, and listening. Toddler Trails provides a child-friendly experience guided by a naturalist, where they can explore nature using all these senses and more!

The fee for Toddler Trails is $4 per adult/child pair, $2 for additional older siblings. Note that toddlers require parental assistance; older siblings must be able to attend to themselves as program participants. A discounted rate for three consecutive sessions is available for $10/adult-child pair. There is no charge for children under 12 months or additional adults.

The Lettermen are returning to the Lakeshore. What is trivia night?

Trivia night is an interactive trivia contest played in teams of eight people. Teams will take part in eight separate rounds of ten questions each, with fun categories ranging from movies to history and everything in between. There will definitely be something for everyone.

The fun doesn’t stop there, however. There will be plenty of chances to win prizes through either raffles or trivia winnings. In addition, beverages and snacks will be available to make this a fun evening for all participants.

All money raised during the Trivia Night Party will help support the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School.

How do I sign up?

Anyone is eligible to sign up to participate, from businesses to groups of family and friends. A table of eight people cost $150 or you can purchase individual tickets for $20 each. Fill out and return the form below to the OLOL School Office, with a check made payable to Our Lady of Lourdes School, for your tickets. The Living Last Supper provides adults and students a glimpse into the lives that Jesus touched. Learn more about the 12 men who gave up everything to follow Him.  They learn and teach His ways, yet one of them will betray Him.  Each disciple wonders “Is it I?” as they prepare for what is now known as “The last Supper”.  The play, presented with live music and a chorus of 30 people is considered a snapshot of when da Vinci created the painting.

One by one, the 12 apostles share directly with the audience their experience with Jesus, how they were found and the time they spent together, including the moments leading up to his acknowledgment of impending betrayal. 

March 3 is a special performance for student groups who are accompanied by their adult leader and/or teacher.  Tickets for this event are $4 per person.

March 4, 5^th, and 6^th performances are at 7:00 PM and Sunday March 7^th, the performance is at 2:00 PM.

The Outagamie County Master Gardeners announce their annual Garden Expectations Conference to be held Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 9:00am – 3:30pm at Appleton East High School, 2121 Emmers Drive, Appleton. This year’s theme is “The Nature of Things,” offering practical advice on how to provide an inviting landscape for people and animals alike.  Use native plantings to enhance your backyard and help restore a bit of our natural heritage in your corner of the world. Grow that lush lawn you’ve always dreamed of in a more eco-friendly way, and be inspired to sit back and enjoy the lessons along the way. It’s the nature of things! 

Keynote presenter, Neil Diboll, Prairie Ecologist with Prairie Nursery in Westfield, WI is recognized internationally as an expert in ecological and natural landscape design and has spent 25 years in research, design, and installation of native plant communities for prairies, wetlands and woodlands.  While many consider prairie plants suitable for rural settings, Neil will show how you don’t need acres of land to grow and appreciate native flowers and grasses!  Learn to incorporate these beautiful flowers, grasses, trees and shrubs into your landscape no matter how large or small, whether it’s a cottage garden or a formal setting.

Drawing on the characters and gardening wisdom expressed in her novel, Time in a Garden, Appleton native, Mary Agria, will share about how life, like the garden itself, experiences its share of changes and problems that leave us wondering how to cope. The challenges gardeners face every day can teach us a great deal about love and loss and what makes for healthy growth as families and communities. 

What would a garden be without the chirping of birds, the buzz of bees or the movement of butterfly wings? It’s these kinds of creatures that bring your garden to life. Tammy Borden, wildlife enthusiast and Master Gardener Volunteer, will help you attract more beneficial wildlife to your urban or rural backyard, and provide tips on how to keep those pesky varmints out.

Kevin Jarek, Outagamie Crops, Soil and Horticulture Agent of the UW Extension, will show how less can be more when it comes to lawn care! Learn how to use a more organic approach and still have a lawn that stands out in the neighborhood as a shining example of what a healthy, environmentally sound lawn should look like.

Conference registration is $30 and includes lunch.  The public is welcome to attend.  Door prizes, vendors, reference materials and information on the Master Gardener program will be available.

The Green Bay YMCA is having its second annual Zumbathon to benefit the strong kids campaign at the Broadview YMCA Gym on Friday, February 19th from 5 to 7PM.

A documentary-style depiction of the Algerians’ struggle to liberate themselves from French colonial power.  The film combines actual newsreel footage of the political torture and violence with staged sequences recreating the action.

On January 30, 1972 in Derry, Ireland, a peaceful civil rights protest march that was staged to protest British laws was stopped by a heavily armed British militia. Seen through the eyes of one of the central organizers of the march, the film uncovers a shocking instance of excessive force, ending the hope for nonviolent resolution.

As a military observer, U.S. Marine Captain Brian Steidle witnessed the horrors of the conflict between the Arab government and the black African citizens of Darfur, Sudan. When you have eaten your fill you are invited to sit and visit with neighbors or refresh your skills at building Legos®, playing Scrabble®  (all words must be nature oriented), or participate in a nature activity. All those who attend will receive a free Ridges’ Trail Pass to hike the trails and boardwalks enjoying the winter wonders of The Ridges Sanctuary.

The Ridges Sanctuary owes its existence to a group of visionaries who saw value in the extraordinary biodiversity of the Baileys Harbor “bog”. Emma Toft was one of the most vocal and persistent of those visionaries, and the Great Waffle Breakfast celebrates the 119^th  anniversary of her birthday . Thanks to the work of “Miss Emma,” the other founders, and all its members since 1937, today the Sanctuary preserves over 1600 acres in Baileys Harbor and near Clark Lake.

The Ridges Sanctuary, a non-profit nature preserve, is located just north of Baileys Harbor on County Highway Q. Trails are open to the public year round for a small fee (members may hike at no charge). Naturalist-led snowshoe hikes in the Sanctuary are scheduled on Fridays at 1 PM through February.
