Food Addicts Anonymous is an organization that believes that Food Addiction is a biochemical disorder that occurs at a cellular level and therefore cannot be cured by willpower or by therapy alone. We feel that food addiction is not a moral or character issue. This Twelve Step program believes that food addiction can be managed by abstaining from (eliminating) addictive foods, following a program of sound nutrition (a food plan), and working the Twelve Steps of the program. After we have gone through a process of withdrawal from addictive foods many of us have experienced miraculous life-style changes. There are no dues or fees required for membership, but only a desire to stop eating addictive foods.

What was Appleton like during the Progressive Era (1850 – 1920)? The turn of the century was a period of speculation and excitement. Americans felt the excitement of world fairs and new technologies entering their daily lives. This new exhibit at the History Museum hinges on Appleton’s evolution from a fledgling manufacturing town to a modern industrial center. Through a collection of 3,000 photographs, amateur photographer W.D. Schlafer captured this rapidly changing environment during the Progressive Era in the Fox Cities. Visitors will see how much Appleton and the Fox Cities evolved as new technologies and ideas changed the lives of area residents during this transformative period.

With the growing concern over the spread of aquatic invasive species to Wisconsin’s inland lakes, many lake association members and other concerned citizens are looking for ways to get involved. The Clean Boats, Clean Waters volunteer watercraft inspection program is an opportunity to take a front line defense against the spread of aquatic invasive species.

Through the Clean Boats, Clean Waters program, volunteers are trained to organize and conduct a boater education program in their community. Adults and youth teams educate boaters on how and where invasive species are most likely to hitch a ride into water bodies. Volunteers perform boat and trailer checks for invasive species, distribute informational brochures and collect and report any new water body infestations.

COUPONING CONTEST FOCUS OF MONEY SMART WEEK

OSHKOSH, Wisconsin (March 15, 2012) – Do family and friends consider you a grand master of couponing? Has using coupons had a major impact on your personal finances? If so, that expertise and skill could be put to the ultimate test in the upcoming Money Smart Week Couponing Contest sponsored by Festival Foods and CitizensFirst Credit Union.

On April 24 CitizensFirst will provide four contestants $100 to spend in one hour at Festival Foods, challenging them to make the best possible food purchases using their own coupons. The contestant with the most money saved will receive a $250 Festival Foods gift certificate. The contestant with the most nutritional choices will be awarded one-month YMCA membership and a yellow Mike’s Hard Lemonade bicycle. Items purchased by contestants will be donated to the Oshkosh Area Community Pantry.

Contestants will be chosen by the Winnebago Money Smart Week Steering Committee, the contest organizers. Visitors will discover through interactive exhibits what an appropriate serving size looks like, see firsthand what it takes to burn off calories, test their flexibility and balance, review the latest clinical research and realize they can reduce their risk of disease with healthy choices

Consisting of 48 individual mosaics created by people affected by cancer and other illnesses, the mosaic wall uses creative self-expression as a powerful vehicle for holistic healing of body, mind, and spirit. OFFERS A WORKSHOP THAT ENCOURAGES A NEW VIEW OF RETIREMENT

Milwaukee, WI (March 15, 2012) ….Mary Hague, retired R.N. and Franciscan speaker, will be facilitating a workshop, Ageless in the Lord, April 25, 9 AM-3 PM, at Monte Alverno Retreat & Spirituality Center, 1000 N. Ballard Road, Appleton.

Ms. Hague invites all who are retired or contemplating retirement to attend. “Retirement can be a very difficult event for many,” she explains. “Not everyone retires successfully. This presentation will task participants to examine their core strengths and values. This combined with establishing goals for retirement will lead to a more purposeful and meaningful life.”

The program will examine the challenges of aging.

“Aging is a gift from God,” Ms. Hague explains. “Retirement can be viewed as part of God’s abundant plan to bring us to full spiritual maturity. The losses that accompany aging can be engines of growth. Instead of leading to despair, loss can lead us to wholeness and holiness as we become more dependent on God’s grace and mercy.

“I came to realize that the God given gifts and all the things I loved most about my vocation of nursing were still available to me, even though I was retired. Now I have more time to be present to those I love. I try to live each day in the present and to find the gifts that each new day brings. I have found a new freedom as I discover God in all aspects of my life,” Ms. Hague concludes.

About the facilitator: Kaukauna resident Mary Hague recently retired after 19 years of working as the Wellness Director of the Capuchin Province of St. Joseph. One of her major focuses was to assist and support the friars as they prepared for retirement and the transitions that come with aging. She attended the Johnson Institute and received a certificate in spiritual gerontology. Ms Hague states that “I have come to see aging not as a thief in the night but as a gift from God and as a master teacher.”

Monte Alverno Retreat & Spirituality Center is a Capuchin ministry. The Capuchins are an international community of friars modeling themselves after St. Francis of Assisi. The brothers of the Capuchin Province of St. Joseph, headquartered in Detroit, serve in a variety of ministries including social service, schools, chaplaincy, retreat houses and parishes in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, California, Nicaragua, and Panama. Established at Mt. Calvary Wisconsin in 1857, there are currently 184 members in the St. Joseph province.

The Outagamie and Calumet County Foster Care Program is offering an informational session for those interested in helping children and youth in need by becoming a foster care or a respite care provider in either county. Homes are needed for children and youth from Birth through age 18, and especially for infants, teenagers and sibling groups. The City of Gillett Fire Department is planning their annual Archery Shoot Fundraiser for Saturday April 28, 2012. It will begin at 11:00 a.m. and will be held at the Loan Oak Gun Club on Highway 32, one mile north of Gillett.
            Games include wooden washer shoot, fire hydrant shoot, poker shoot, snack cracker shoot, poacher’s run and a 3D course.
There will be a section entirely for the kids. With the help of the Golden Arrow Archery Club from Green Bay, there will be instruction for the kids on how to properly handle a bow and arrow.

OSHKOSH, Wisconsin (April 16, 2012) – When it comes to saving money, small changes can make a big impact. That’s why this year’s Oshkosh Money Smart Living Conference is all about identifying those savings tips that can work for anyone.

FVTC Hosting 5^th Annual Aviation Open House

Fox Valley Technical College is hosting its 5^th annual Aviation Open House and Breakfast Fly-In on Saturday, April 28 from 8:00 – noon at its S.J. Spanbauer Center, 3601 Oregon Street in Oshkosh.

The free event features a tour of FVTC’s aviation-related programs, high-tech labs, and simulators, in addition to an opportunity to meet with faculty members, current students, and graduates. Training for pilots, aircraft electronics, and airframe and power plant mechanics are all provided at the center. Visitors can also purchase an all-you-can-eat breakfast option for $8 per person. This year’s open house includes a silent auction as a special fundraiser for a 2009 Aeronautics Pilot graduate’s spouse, who recently received a multi-visceral organ transplant.
