Now in its fourth year, the Packers Hall of Fame’s Black History Month again will culminate with a panel discussion, and also include a new video about the history of African-American players in the NFL and with the Packers. Highlighted exhibits, booklets to accompany visits and an autograph session are also a part of the festivities.
The annual panel discussion, set for Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hall of Fame, will feature Packers all-time leading rusher Ahman Green, along with former players Willie Davis and Dave Robinson. Topics will include the contributions of African-Americans to the game of football as a whole, as well as to the success of the Packers. Admission to the Packers Hall of Fame will be free after 6 p.m. for the discussion.
An autograph session, featuring Packers Hall of Famers Willie Davis (also a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame) and Dave Robinson, will be held Friday, Feb. 26, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Hall of Fame’s lobby in the lower level of the Atrium. It is free to the public.
Visitors to the Hall of Fame will be given a booklet that will serve as their guide while touring the facility. It will provide a history of African-American players in professional football as a whole, as well as provide information on many notable African-American Packers players and coaches, including Bob Mann (1950-54), the first African-American player ever to see action in a Packers’ regular-season game.
Green and gold ribbons will be placed throughout the Hall’s exhibits to recognize the many African-American players, especially those who have been enshrined as members of the Packers Hall of Fame.
Local schools will get involved in the celebration as well by participating in a distance learning project with the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Four video conference sessions will be held over Feb. 18 and 19 which will feature a panel at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Panel members include James Harris, a senior personnel executive for the Detroit Lions and a pioneer at quarterback, and Hall of Famer Ron Mix, who participated in AFL Boycott of the 1964 championship game while with the San Diego Chargers. Schools interested in participating should contact the Hall at 920/569-7145 to register.
