4th Annual Shamrock Shuffle 5k Run/Walk
presented by UW Oshkosh Credit Union
Ready for St. Patrick’s Day Weekend
Event aims to draw large crowds and raise money for community & campus charities
Oshkosh—University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Student Recreation announced event details for the Fourth Annual Shamrock Shuffle 5K Run/Walk presented by UW Oshkosh Credit Union.
The race will take place on Saturday, March 12, 2011 beginning at 10am (advance registration is strongly recommended) and will start and end at the UW Oshkosh Student Recreation & Wellness Center. This non-traditional St. Patrick’s Day event will raise funds for two local organizations:
· Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh
· Roseanne Hoefel Multicultural Fund
Event coordinator Kelly Beisenstein-Weiss is excited about this year’s event. Last year’s Shuffle brought in over 1300 participants.
The Shamrock Shuffle was started in Oshkosh as a way to unite UW Oshkosh college students with the surrounding community. Online registration and chip timing are being added to this year’s event.
“It’s a great wellness event for both the community and the UW Oshkosh campus,” says Tori Arneson, a Nursing major and Student Recreation student employee at UWO. “The energy is high and we have a great time celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in a healthy way. Everyone has a blast!”
Cost to participate in the event is $15, which includes a t-shirt. By participating on a team of 6 or more for $20, participants receive a long-sleeve t-shirt with their team name on the back and festive Shamrock Shuffle goodies. Individuals can also enter as a “charity participant” for $10 (no t-shirt included). Team registration is due March 2; early registration is due March 8. Day of registration for individuals (9am) will also be available for $20.
For more information or questions or to register online, contact Kelly Beisenstein-Weiss (shamrockshuffle@uwosh.edu) or visit the Shamrock Shuffle website (http://recreation.uwosh.edu/shamrock-shuffle) to download a registration form.

What has been called the “greatest musical of all time,” Andrew Lloyd Webber’s THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, will be presented on March 10 -20 by the Appleton North High School Theatre and Music Departments. North’s production will feature elaborate sets, costumes, and the signature special effects for which the musical is famous including the falling chandelier and the Phantom’s underground lake. The show’s intricate and soaring score features a large cast of talented singers, dancers, and musicians.
ZFX, INC., a world-class provider of flying effects with over a dozen Broadway credits including Wicked, Peter Pan, and Fiddler on the Roof will debut its PHANTOM effects package with North’s production. Director Ron Parker states, “We are so excited to be the first Phantom production anywhere to use ZFX’s professional flying effects. What they create at North will be marketed and used in Phantom productions all around the world. They’ve built a special chandelier which we will be the first theatre ever to use! Other new effects they’ve designed and will premiere with us will make the Phantom appear and disappear. It really will be amazing!”
Parker states that PHANTOM OF THE OPERA marks the largest, most complex show ever produced at North. “We have a cast, crew, and orchestra of almost 150 students with scores of parent volunteers and a great deal of community involvement. We’re known for big musicals at North, but this one is definitely the biggest!”
Based on the classic novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it. He falls madly in love with an innocent young soprano, Christine, and devotes himself to creating a new star by nurturing her extraordinary talents and by employing all of the devious methods at his command. Its sensational score includes "Think of Me," "Angel of Music," "Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Masquerade" and the title song.
The winner of seven 1988 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA has been seen by over 100 million people in 144 cities in 27 countries. Worldwide, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA consistently plays to larger audiences and in longer engagements than any other musical in history. On January 9, 2006, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA became the longest-running show in Broadway history. The musical celebrated an unprecedented milestone on January 26, 2008, when it reached its twentieth anniversary on Broadway.
Performance times are March 10 -12 and 17 -19 at 7:30 P.M. and March 13 and 20 at 1:00 P.M. Admission is $12.00. All seats are reserved. Ticket links and specific performance date information can be found at www.appletonnorththeatre.com. Tickets may also be purchased in person at the North High School box office on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm. Box office personnel are available to answer questions at 920-997-3994 during box office hours.
