What was Appleton like during the Progressive Era (1850 – 1920)? The turn of the century was a period of speculation and excitement. Americans felt the excitement of world fairs and new technologies entering their daily lives. This new exhibit at the History Museum hinges on Appleton’s evolution from a fledgling manufacturing town to a modern industrial center. Through a collection of 3,000 photographs, amateur photographer W.D. Schlafer captured this rapidly changing environment during the Progressive Era in the Fox Cities. Visitors will see how much Appleton and the Fox Cities evolved as new technologies and ideas changed the lives of area residents during this transformative period.

The Bellevue Community Picnic is scheduled for Saturday June 9 at Josten Park in Bellevue. The annual community celebration will include a water fight competition between area fire fighter’s, children’s activities and games, silent auction, food, beverages, and booyah. New this year will be a very entertaining local band “Shaker and the Egg” providing musical entertainment from 5 to 9 pm. Although the picnic has been a Bellevue tradition for many years, this is the fourth year that the picnic has been jointly sponsored by the Bellevue Fire Fighter’s Association along with the Bellevue Lion’s Club. Proceeds from the event help the Bellevue Fire Fighter’s Association purchase life saving support equipment. For the Bellevue Lion’s Club, proceeds from the annual community picnic have been a major source of the over $140,000 of charitable contributions donated to worthy local causes since the club was chartered in 1995. These contributions include a long list of such charitable items as the annual funding of vision screening for local pre-schools and grade schools, funding eye examinations in partnership with Lens Crafters and donation of a Vision Viewer to the visually impaired. The Bellevue Lion’s Club has also contributed to local community needs such as donating funds towards an electronic scoreboard and playground equipment at Josten Park.

We are putting on a benefit to help the Family of Samantha V. Smith. Samantha was a beautiful young woman at the age of 24, she had a bright future ahead of her with the man she loved and her two small children. But things can change in an instant.
Samantha was killed in a car crash on January 9, 2012. She was an amazing mom to Matthew (5) and Olivia (3). Both children have medical conditions that could cause financial struggles for them and their caregivers. Hopefully, this will present them with opportunities for a promising future in life. The Benefit will take place on June 9th at THE BAR on Lynndale in Appleton WI. The Bar has kindly donated their time and business to help us as Samantha was an employee and part of their family. Events such as raffles, auctions, a pig roast and a bake sale will be held between 2pm and close. Bound for Severance, Roses for the Dead and Beyond Fate will be playing from 9 - 12pm.
