The State of Wisconsin Board on Aging and Long Term Care is currently recruiting volunteer Ombudsman for Northeast Wisconsin nursing facilities. The role of volunteer Ombudsman is to become an advocate for long term care facility residents. Volunteer Ombudsman must pass a rigorous screening process in order to qualify for the position. Food Addicts Anonymous is an organization that believes that Food Addiction is a biochemical disorder that occurs at a cellular level and therefore cannot be cured by willpower or by therapy alone. We feel that food addiction is not a moral or character issue. This Twelve Step program believes that food addiction can be managed by abstaining from (eliminating) addictive foods, following a program of sound nutrition (a food plan), and working the Twelve Steps of the program. After we have gone through a process of withdrawal from addictive foods many of us have experienced miraculous life-style changes. There are no dues or fees required for membership, but only a desire to stop eating addictive foods.

Americans felt the excitement of world fairs and new technologies entering their daily lives. This new exhibit at the History Museum hinges on Appleton’s evolution from a fledgling manufacturing town to a modern industrial center. Through a collection of 3,000 photographs, amateur photographer W.D. Schlafer captured this rapidly changing environment during the Progressive Era in the Fox Cities. Visitors will see how much Appleton and the Fox Cities evolved as new technologies and ideas changed the lives of area residents during this transformative period.

The Copper River Midnight Riders snowmobile club will be sponsoring the second annual Wisconsin Snow Drags on Saturday, January 14, 2012. This is the first circuit race for the 2012 season, with competitors coming from Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. There is over $1500 in prize money with a $500 Top Gun prize. The 500 ft. groomed snow track will be the platform for the following race classes: modified 500, 600, 700, 800, and open; stock 600, 700, 800, and open; 120 cc; and vintage. Children and parents will learn about owls of Wisconsin during an evening program at Mosquito Hill Nature Center on Saturday, January 7 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The event kicks off the fifth year of monthly programs for families sponsored by the center, located east of New London.

“I think listening to the hooting of owls has to be one of life’s most special pleasures, said naturalist Jessica Miller. Learning more about Wisconsin’s owls gives those calls even more meaning.” The program will begin with an indoor presentation featuring live owls from the Feather Rehabilitation Center, New London. Miller will introduce participants to basic owl biology and adaptations. A short walk outdoors will follow to listen for these fairly common, but often unseen, nocturnal wonders.

Monthly programs for families will continue through 2012 as part of the center’s “Leave No Family Inside” effort. “We hope that getting families outside learning and playing together will lead to a better connection with the natural world,” said Miller. “Leave No Family Inside” is an offshoot of the national “Leave No Child Inside” campaign, started as a means to get children to reconnect with the out of doors.

Are you serious about getting in shape this winter but don’t want to do it by yourself? Take part in a series of snowshoe outings designed to burn calories and get your heart pumping. Five Serious Snowshoe Sundays are scheduled at Mosquito Hill Nature Center from 12 noon to 3:00 PM starting January 8 and continuing every other Sunday through March 4.

During each session, naturalist Jessica Miller will start with an indoor program focusing on a variety of topics including proper winter attire, nutrition, preventing hypothermia and fatigue, purchasing snowshoes and more. The class will suit up and hit the trails, not for a leisurely hike but for a bout of invigorating exercise, increasing speed and distance as the weeks progress. Participants will set a collective mileage goal to achieve by March 4.

These sessions are best suited for older teens and adults. If snow conditions are not adequate, a vigorous hike will be substituted.

Entitled “Cost-Cutting Couponing and Upcycling 101,” the event takes place at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at the Highway 44 branch, 2900 Universal St., Oshkosh. SLED FEST II - The 2^nd Annual Sled Fest will be held at the Chase Stone Barn, 8246 County Rd S, Pulaski, WI, in the Town of Chase (Oconto County). There will be lots of fun-filled activities for the whole family throughout the day.

Talented physicians with a passion for music will take the Meyer Theatre stage on Saturday, January 21, 2012 for the 6th Annual Doctors in Recital. All proceeds will benefit Freedom House, Brown County’s only shelter that serves all types of homeless families with children. A suspenseful tale of love and family upended by obsession and suspicion, “Circumstance” is a provocative coming-of-age story that cracks open the hidden world of Iranian youth culture, where a young woman's most electrifying passions can become the most dangerous of secrets.

The secluded, wooded trails of Mosquito Hill Nature Center will be the site for two torch-lit snowshoe walks on Saturday, January 28 and February 11 beginning at 6:30 PM. The walks feature a leisurely, self-paced 45-minute excursion into the center’s Wolf River lowland forest followed by refreshments.

Usually accessible only in the winter, the nature center’s lowland forest is home to deer, coyote, fox, owls and other seldom seen native animals. Participants will enter this wild area following lighted tiki torches along the easy trails. Listen for barred owls or coyotes calling, and view the moon and stars while enjoying the outdoors with family and friends. Hot beverages and snacks will be served in the center’s interpretive building.

The cost is $8.00 for adults, $5 for students, seniors and Friends of Mosquito Hill, or $25 for families, and includes snowshoe rental. Getting out to enjoy winter in Wisconsin is easier and more fun with the aid of snowshoes. No skill is involved and the nature center’s snowshoes are available to fit ages 5 and older. Younger children may be pulled on sleds. A naturalist-led indoor program will introduce families to this fun winter sport and offer tips for beginners. The group will then head outdoors for a leisurely walk on the Mosquito Hill trails with time planned to learn about our winter world.

Monthly programs for families will continue through 2012 as part of the center’s “Leave No Family Inside” effort, an offshoot of the national “Leave No Child Inside” campaign, started as a means to get children to reconnect with the out of doors.

Appleton Youth Hockey Benefit and Car Raffle

The Wizard Blizzard Fundraiser is set for Saturday, Feb. 4 at Darboy Supper Club, N9695 County N, Darboy. Doors open at 7pm. This event features live music, silent auction, raffles, food and a cash bar. Admission is $20 each or 2 for $35.

In addition, a raffle for a 2012 Dodge Journey valued at $20,790, will be drawn that night. Car raffle tickets are $50 for one, $100 for three. Tickets for the car may be purchased now until the drawing the night of the event. Must be 18 or older to purchase a ticket for the car raffle. Need not be present to win.

Maximum of 2000 car raffle tickets will be sold.

David Pilgrim, vice president for diversity and inclusion at Ferris State University and curator of the Jim Crow Museum, opens Lawrence University’s celebration of Black History Month with a talk on why he collects racist artifacts. He will use some of his objects to discuss how to promote social justice and teach acceptance. Free and open to the public.

Dutch-born scientist Frans de Waal, one of the world’s preeminent primatologists, discusses his ground-breaking research on primates. He is the author of 13 books on primate behavior, including “Chimpanzee Politics,” “Primates and Philosophers: How Morality Evolved” and "The Age of Empathy: Nature’s Lessons for a Kinder Society.” de Wall was named one of the “100 World’s Most Influential People Today” by Time Magazine in 2007. Fish Creek celebrates 25 years of Winter Festival this year, February 3-5. Join us for a weekend full of family fun and winter activities. The large heated tent at Clark Park hosts a festive atmosphere inside and out: wild winter games, minnow races, tandem ski race, snowshoe dance, live music, chili cook-off, beer, brats, human foosball tournament, and a fireworks display at night. All proceeds from Saturday's games and concessions benefit Door County non-profit organizations.

The Appleton Education Foundation is seeking nominations for the fifth annual Thomas G. Scullen Leadership Award.

Nominations will be accepted until 2/29/2012. The award recognizes a Fox Cities resident who is considered a leader in the field of education. The winner will be selected in March and receive a $1,000 prize.

This is a 9 week class on Tuesday nights at 6:35PM - 7:35PM for beginners and 7:45-8:45 PM for intermediate Starting February 7th and ending Aril 10th 2012 Cost for this session is $96.00. This equates to only $10.66 a class. Drop ins are welcome at a cost of $12.00 each class.

If you are just curious, new, or looking for something to do this class is perfect for you.

This Belly Dance shake it up class is designed to help you better understand the movements that create the structure of belly dance. Teaching techniques through isolations and muscular training we will focus on movement break downs so that you begin with the correct techniques to perform any of the common moves, such as upper body undulations , chest circles, hip circles, drops & shimmies'. This all adds up to a great workout, however the goal of the class is proper technique and to prepare you for the next level of belly dance.

Class attire is fitted comfortable clothes. No skirts so as instructor can see the knees and lower back position.

Example: Full fitted or half coverage top (as to see tummy) Yoga pant, Stretchy pant, or shorts with or without hip scarf or coin belt and bare feet. Hip scarves are available to purchase.

The first of six weekly interactive public programs examining uniquely American musical genres through the use of documentary film excerpts and scholar-led discussions. Each session will include approximately 50 minutes of film and 70 minutes of discussion. This version of the "fun college course on pop music you never got to take in college" opens with a look at blues and gospel music and will include excerpts from "Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues, Episode 1: Feel Like Going Home" and "Say Amen, Somebody." Free and open to the public.

Members of Wild Space Dance Company and guest artists weave together luscious layers of nature, music, prose and a generous helping of humor in this performance of original work and premieres. The performance features 4-6 pieces of solo and duet works that fuse the sweet and forbidden, dreamy desires and tempting realities into full-bodied dances.
