What was Appleton like during the Progressive Era (1850 – 1920)? The turn of the century was a period of speculation and excitement. Americans felt the excitement of world fairs and new technologies entering their daily lives. This new exhibit at the History Museum hinges on Appleton’s evolution from a fledgling manufacturing town to a modern industrial center. Through a collection of 3,000 photographs, amateur photographer W.D. Schlafer captured this rapidly changing environment during the Progressive Era in the Fox Cities. Visitors will see how much Appleton and the Fox Cities evolved as new technologies and ideas changed the lives of area residents during this transformative period.

Gaelic Storm's latest album Cabbage marked the band's highest charting album on the Billboard 200 at #73, their second #1 on the Billboard World Music Chart.  The band takes a distinct pride in the fact that its music and performances are a celebration of Irish culture as well as a medium of connection for many of the 36 million Irish-Americans who have at least some Irish blood in them.

This Belly Dance shake it up class is designed to help you better understand the movements that create the structure of belly dance.   Teaching techniques  through isolations and muscular training we will focus on movement break downs so that you begin with the correct techniques to perform any of the common moves, such as  upper body undulations , chest circles, hip circles, drops & shimmies'.  This all adds up to a great workout, however the goal of the class is proper technique and to prepare you for the next level of belly dance.

Class attire is fitted comfortable clothes.  No skirts so as instructor can see the knees and lower back position.

Geology Rocks! incorporates history, art, personal experiences, group activities, regional jobs and Wisconsin’s third largest industry.  This exhibit has it all: fossils, gems, jewelry, killer asteroids, volcanoes, earthquakes, minerals, lapidary, crystals, bedrock, mining, collecting, exhibit graphics and hands-on interactives… and, of course, lots of fascinating rocks!
 

5 year old Bennett Heyrman, son of Stephanie (Exferd) and Sean Heyrman, was born with CMV (Cytomegalovirus). Approximately 8 out of 1,000 babies are born with this virus. Bennett has also been diagnosed with CP, Cortical Blindness, and is deaf, progressively developing severe disabilities. He is confined to specially made chairs, must eat through a feeding tube, experiences numerous seizures on a weekly basis, and has undergone many surgeries already to sustain his life. This benefit hopes to raise money for his family to purchase a van equipped with facilities to properly transport Bennett to his numerous appointments and surgeries. At this time his family is depending on a mini-van with no special equipment and mounting mechanical difficulties. Bennett’s family makes numerous trips to Madison and Milwaukee for appointments and surgeries. If we can achieve this goal, any leftover funds would go to assist with mounting medical expenses.

Appleton, WI – The Outagamie County Master Gardeners announce their annual Garden Expectations Conference to be held Saturday, March 24, 2012 from 8:45am – 3:30pm at Liberty Hall, 800 Eisenhower Drive, Kimberly, WI. This year’s expert presenters will cover a myriad of topics to aid gardeners in growing both ornamental and edible plantings. 

Chuck Stangel, Landscape Architect & Designer with Vande Hey Landscape of Little Chute, WI, will demonstrate how to combine color, form and texture to bring a new level of interest to your landscape.   Learn basic design principles, color theory and horticulture knowledge that will help create eye-popping focal points and inviting feature plantings in your backyard. Chuck has served as a board member of the Gardens of the Fox Cities and the Wisconsin Landscape Contractors Association.

Richard Hawke comes from the Chicago Botanic Garden, bringing beauty and science together, sharing insight from his extensive research. Learn about ornamental plants that are not only attractive and beneficial, but can withstand the extremes of a Wisconsin climate, from its frigid cold in the winter to its blistering heat and humidity in the summer.

Richard has extensively researched herbaceous perennials to determine the best garden plants for the Upper Midwest and areas with similar climates, receiving the Award for Program Excellence from the American Public Garden Association in 2008.

David Parsons, a former UW Horticultural Special Investigator & Horticultural Assistant, will share his expertise on vegetables in the garden. Many are making efforts to control their consumption of unwanted pesticides and chemicals, and are returning to growing and harvesting their own food. Learn about proven varieties and methods for growing and maintaining your own vegetables, whether you have a large plot or a few pots. David also enjoys serving as a judge at Wisconsin Fairs.

Flags flew and hearts were high. She was unsinkable, unstoppable, unbeatable. So began the fateful voyage. Four days later she founders in dark waters and so her legend is born. Commemorating the 100th anniversary (1912-2012) of the sinking of the Titanic,

Appleton North High School Theatre and Music Departments will present “Titanic, The Musical” on March 8-18, 2012. Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, “Titanic, The Musical” combines the true story of the magnificent and tragic “ship of dreams” with exceptional music, outstanding choreography, impressive scenic design, and exquisite period costuming in a powerfully moving theatrical production.

Grand in scale and featuring a large ensemble cast, the audience is introduced to the real-life individuals who played an integral part in the fateful voyage – the officers, crew and passengers – from all classes. Whether they travelled first class, second class or steerage, all the Titanic passengers stepped on board the massive “floating city” with a shared feeling of hope and wonder. As the audience becomes acquainted with the various individuals on board, they gain an intimate insight into human vulnerability and human strength in the face of disaster.

The beautiful soaring music throughout is stirring and monumental, telling the legendary story by weaving in and out of moments in the lives of all those on board the fateful voyage, rather than following the story of two fictional characters as in the popular movie. Incredibly moving and inspirational, North’s production of “Titanic, the Musical” is a historical journey as well as a musical one which honors those who were lost and those who survived on the centennial anniversary of their voyage. North’s production features a cast, crew, and orchestra of more than 140 students as well elaborate costumes and a set which incorporates actual images from the original ship’s voyage on a giant 30 foot wide projection backdrop screen. Appleton North theatre director Ron Parker states, “ We are very excited to bring this musical to the Fox Valley for the first time. Similar productions are being staged all over the world in 2012 to honor the hundredth anniversary of the sinking. Everyone knows the popular movie “Titanic,” but the Broadway musical actually premiered several months before, winning every major theatre award for that year including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Scenic Design, and Best Orchestration, yet because of the Hollywood film’s popularity, many people don’t even know that a musical “Titanic” exists. They’re in for quite a treat.”

In order to heighten the historical connection for the audience, each attendee upon entering the auditorium will receive their own "boarding pass" containing the name, age, and origin of a real passenger on the Titanic in 1912.

At the conclusion of the performance, each audience member will be able to discover the fate of the original owner of their boarding pass.

Performance times are March 8th -10th and 15th -17th at 7:30 P.M. and March 11th and 18th at 1:00 P.M. Admission is $12.00. All seats are reserved. March 8th and 11th

The beautiful soaring music throughout is stirring and monumental, telling the legendary story by weaving in and out of moments in the lives of all those on board the fateful voyage, rather than following the story of two fictional characters as in the popular movie. Incredibly moving and inspirational, North’s production of “Titanic, the Musical” is a historical journey as well as a musical one which honors those who were lost and those who survived on the centennial anniversary of their voyage. North’s production features a cast, crew, and orchestra of more than 140 students as well elaborate costumes and a set which incorporates actual images from the original ship’s voyage on a giant 30 foot wide projection backdrop screen. Appleton North theatre director Ron Parker states, “ We are very excited to bring this musical to the Fox Valley for the first time. Similar productions are being staged all over the world in 2012 to honor the hundredth anniversary of the sinking. Everyone knows the popular movie “Titanic,” but the Broadway musical actually premiered several months before, winning every major theatre award for that year including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Scenic Design, and Best Orchestration, yet because of the Hollywood film’s popularity, many people don’t even know that a musical “Titanic” exists. They’re in for quite a treat.”

In order to heighten the historical connection for the audience, each attendee upon entering the auditorium will receive their own "boarding pass" containing the name, age, and origin of a real passenger on the Titanic in 1912.

At the conclusion of the performance, each audience member will be able to discover the fate of the original owner of their boarding pass.

Kick off springtime by discovering the exciting world of aviation with an interactive, educational family experience at EAA’s Family Flight Fest, scheduled for Saturday, March 24, and Sunday, March 25, at EAA AirVenture Museum in Oshkosh.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, the museum’s younger visitors can enjoy a variety of aviation-related activities that will educate and spark their curiosity in flight. A lifelong resident of the Green Bay area, Steve Fostner, 59, has been diagnosed and battling with stage 4 cancer for some time now.  A University of Wisconsin Green Bay art major and Vietnam War veteran, Steve has worked for the U.S. Postal Service over the past 20 or more years. Throughout that time Steve, an accomplished artist, has loved this community and given back to it through his generosity and his art. Conventional treatments have not had great success and Steve is now enrolled in an expensive experimental program through the UW Hospital system. Silver Lake College of the Holy Family’s Student Council for the Exceptional Child is planning the 2^nd Annual Wheelchair Basketball Tournament to benefit Special Olympics and Cerebral Palsy Inc.’s CP Center. The first game will begin at 10:30 am with games being played until 3 pm.

Advanced tickets for adults are $3 ($4 at the door). Students (with student ID) are $3 and children ages 3 and under are free. Tickets are available in the bookstore or business office at the College. All proceeds will be donated to Special Olympics and the CP Center.

Silver Lake College of the Holy Family’s Look Ahead Lakers program is planning a FUNdraising event for Saturday, March 31^st for fifth and sixth grade boys and girls. Be a part of March Madness and join the Silver Lake College Lakers for a Mini Basketball Camp and Scrimmage. Students will have the opportunity to practice with the Lakers from 2:30-4:30 pm in the Lincoln High School Gym with a series of drills and technique-building exercises. Then at 6 pm, the students will play in a game with the Lakers players, which will include pep band music, half-time entertainment, concessions and raffles! The game will be refereed by Manitowoc’s Mayor Justin Nickels. Come join in the fun!

The Fond du Lac Women;s Chorus will present it's annual spring concert"Music Of Our Lives" on Sunday May 20 2:p.m. at Memorial Baptist Church 645 Forest Avenu Fond du Lac, WI.

High lights of th performance will include; "I Feel Pretty" from "Wst Side Story",  "I Enjoy Being A Girl" from "Flower Drum Song', "They Call The Wind  Maria", from "Paint Your Wagon", Polly WOlly Doodle"/"Lt"l Liza Jane", and so much more.

Harpist, Serena Kamps will be  making a guest appearance with the chorus.

The chorus is under the direction of Kris Bartelt with Georgene Antos as accompanist.
