Lawrence University hosts a 1,000-square-foot national traveling exhibition that examines how President Lincoln used the U.S. Constitution to confront the intertwined crises of state secession, slavery and wartime civil liberties during the Civil War. Each section highlights different aspects of Lincoln's presidency and his struggle to resolve the basic questions that divided Americans: Was the United States truly one nation or was it a confederacy of sovereign states? How could a country founded on the belief that "all men are created equal" tolerate slavery? In a national crisis, would civil liberties be secure? The exhibition includes reproductions of original documents, including a draft of Lincoln's first inaugural speech, the Emancipation Proclamation and the Thirteenth Amendment. The exhibition, which runs Dec. 12 to Feb. 8, 2013, and is free and open to the public.
