The role of volunteer Ombudsman is to become an advocate for long term care facility residents. Volunteer Ombudsman must pass a rigorous screening process in order to qualify for the position. Food Addicts Anonymous is an organization that believes that Food Addiction is a biochemical disorder that occurs at a cellular level and therefore cannot be cured by willpower or by therapy alone. We feel that food addiction is not a moral or character issue. This Twelve Step program believes that food addiction can be managed by abstaining from (eliminating) addictive foods, following a program of sound nutrition (a food plan), and working the Twelve Steps of the program. After we have gone through a process of withdrawal from addictive foods many of us have experienced miraculous life-style changes. There are no dues or fees required for membership, but only a desire to stop eating addictive foods.

Americans felt the excitement of world fairs and new technologies entering their daily lives. This new exhibit at the History Museum hinges on Appleton’s evolution from a fledgling manufacturing town to a modern industrial center. Through a collection of 3,000 photographs, amateur photographer W.D. Schlafer captured this rapidly changing environment during the Progressive Era in the Fox Cities. Visitors will see how much Appleton and the Fox Cities evolved as new technologies and ideas changed the lives of area residents during this transformative period.

To get to Hemlock Curve Nature Trail, take the Peshtigo Exit from Highway 41. Once on Business 41 in Peshtigo, go south on West Front Street (first street west of the bridge). On behalf of the Buckholz-Klein family, we are pleased to "Pay It Forward" and are holding a benefit in their honor on May 5th, 2012 from Noon-Midnight at City Inn in Berlin, WI. The benefit will include children's games, prizes, raffles, an auction and the live band, Bo...ogie and the YoYo'z!

On September 4, 2011 – Devlin Klein was tragically killed in an automobile accident. Devlin had just begun his senior year at Berlin High School and had aspirations to attend Fox Valley Technical College following graduation. At a time of such peril, Devlin’s mother and stepfather were preparing to introduce their newest member to the family. Shannon, Devlin’s mother, was induced in order to birth her youngest son in time to make funeral arrangements for Devlin. Ryan Buckholz was born on September 6, 2011 – just two days after his eldest brother became an angel. Unfortunately, just 26 short days after Ryan entered the world, tragedy struck again. His mother and father noticed him struggling to breathe and immediately took him to the Berlin Memorial Hospital. Within hours, he was flown to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee. Ryan was diagnosed with Cor Triatriatum, a heart with three atria. Cor Triatriatum is a rare congenital cardiac anomaly, in which the left or right atrium is divided in two by a membrane. In an effort to save Ryan’s life, surgeons performed open-heart surgery, their only option. After 24 days in the NICU, Ryan was released to be home with his family. Due to an emergency surgery and a less than perfect recovery, Ryan must receive shots and medications on a daily basis. A blood clot still exists within Ryan’s defenseless body and he struggles with each and every breath he takes, due to having a paralyzed diaphragm. While mourning the loss of her oldest son and nurturing the life of her youngest, Shannon found herself entering her own battle. Shortly after bringing Ryan home from the hospital, Shannon had a thyroidectomy performed as she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Shannon started radiation therapy on December 15, 2011. During her treatment, she is to be isolated and cannot have any direct contact with her children and family. Shannon will also need to maintain a medication regimen for the remainder of her life. The family has found themselves in a nightmarish reality. Unable to work full-time, as they must attend to not only their children, but Shannon’s health, they no longer have health insurance coverage or a steady income. If there’s ever been a family who lives by the motto, “Pay It Forward”, it’s this family. The Buckholz-Klein family consists of Paul and Shannon (Longsine) Buckholz and their children, Devlin and Louden Klein and William, Adam and Ryan Buckholz.

Bob Howard, a long-time Green Bay business owner of the Razz-Ma-Tazz and Buster’s Bar & Grill needs our help. On October 30, 2011 Bob was admitted into the ICU at a local hospital due to a rare blood clotting disorder. He was eventually air lifted to UW Madison where he remained in ICU for several weeks. Thankfully Bob was well enough to be released from the hospital on December 23, 2011, but only after hearing he had maxed out his medical insurance.

Bob is improving day by day. However, his medical and living expenses are mounting. Family, friends and loved ones will be holding a "Celebration Benefit" for Bob on April 29th at the Riverside Ballroom from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. A Basket Raffle, Paddle Wheel Raffle, Silent Auction, and DJ Crazy Ray will be featured at the benefit. Booyah and refreshments will be available for purchase.

The Coalition is hosting its third annual Green Parade. The parade will be held downtown in the Broadway District beginning at 11:00 a.m. All entries and floats will be green powered (i.e., solar powered, electric, man-powered, etc.). Come out and cheer on local businesses, conservation groups, and civic/charitable groups who will be spreading the "green" word around. This is a great family event.

The Coalition is sponsoring an Eco-Block Party immediately after the Green Parade. The block party is being held at Veterans Memorial Park, directly adjacent to the Neville Museum. There may also be events at the Neville Museum as the Coalition is teaming up with the Museum this year in celebrating Earth Day. There will be green friendly vendors and activities at the Block Party in celebration of Earth Day. There will be plenty of activities for children to engage in, as well as adults to learn about sustainability and living a "greener" life. This is another great family event.

The Brown County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League will be sponsoring its annual Annual Teddy Bear Hunt from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Osprey Point on County Highway GV (one mile south of the Highway 172/Cty GV exit). On Saturday, May 12, the 20th Annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will be held, the largest one-day food drive in Northeast Wisconsin.

Northeast Wisconsin residents are encouraged to donate non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, canned meats and fish, pasta, rice or cereal next to their mailboxes before their regular mail delivery on May 12. Donations in Brown County are distributed to Brown County food pantries.

CITIZENSFIRST AIDS HABITAT RECYCLING EFFORT

OSHKOSH, Wisconsin (April 20, 2011) – For the second year in a row, CitizensFirst will partner with Habitat for Humanity in what has become one of Fond du Lac’s biggest recycling events. A service offered free of charge, it’s one more way CitizensFirst is helping Habitat build a better tomorrow.

Entitled “Fond du Lac Recycle Day,” the event takes place Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the CitizensFirst branch at 1045 E. Johnson St., Fond du Lac. During these hours participants can bring in up to three boxes of documents to be shredded at no cost by Automated Records Management Systems Inc. A free will donation for the service will go help fund the Habitat program in Fond du Lac.

Outdated televisions, microwaves, video players, computers and stereos will similarly be collected to benefit the Habitat for Humanity ReStore of Fond du Lac County. The ReStore will also accept drop offs of new or gently used building equipment and materials.

Vienna 1938. After Kristallnacht and the murder of his father, Ferry Tobler (Johannes Silberschneider) a young Viennese Jew flees from the Nazis and profiteers of Vienna. He scrambles for various exit visas and entry permits, and finally arrives in Prague, where he meets an anti-Nazi German soldier (Armin Mueller-Stahl) who has escaped from Dachau and a sympathetic Czech relief worker. The three make their way to Paris and eventually to Marseille, hoping to sail to a safe port.

This evening's open house will feature those intriguing mounds that dotted (and still dot) the Wisconsin landscape when the European settlers first arrived. Learn about their history and the ideas as to where, how and why the conical, linear, effigy and pyramidal mounds were built. You may be surprised to learn that Wisconsin is the most prominent location of effigy mounds. Learn about the connection between Wisconsin's Aztalan site and the famous Cahokia city near St. Louis. You will come to appreciate the importance of preserving these impressive archeological feature. This event is open to the public at no charge. Families are welcome and refreshments are served.

Oboe Workshop with Dr. Emily Helvering (grades 6-12) A workshop for Oboeists to spend time on reeds, practice techniques and general care for the instrument.

The Peninsula Singers, a Door County choral ensemble, will present their annual spring concert Songs of Heart and Home at two venues this Mother's Day weekend. One concert will be presented on Saturday, May 12, at 7:00 p.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay and the second on Sunday, May 13, at 3:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Sister Bay.

Artistic Director Merle Colburn has assembled a range of music to showcase the skills of the sixty-plus voice choir. The first half of the concert will feature the "Requiem", with solos by Challoner Brown, vocal; Lori Meyer, cello; Nathan Hermus, oboe, Don Carlson, saxophone, and Pamela Johnson, flute.

The second half will be a lighter program, opening with "Lux Arumque" led by Assistant Director Lauren Gilmore. Other numbers include "Unchained Melody", "Down By the Riverside”, "A Chorus Line", and selections by accompanist David Beck. The New Day Singers, ambassadors for The Peninsula Singers, will also perform. The concert will conclude with two familiar songs: "Homeward Bound" and "Operator” with soloists Kurt Colburn and Ann Birnschein, respectively.

The Peninsula Singers continue to offer concerts as a gift to the community. However, a donation of $10.00 per person at the door is suggested to help defray expenses.

The morning sun sends mystical shafts through the fog drifting over the green fields to glint off of the polished plate armor of combatants taking to the field of honor. In sharp contrast, the sun also illuminates gentile ladies ringed around the field, some working cross-stitch, some spinning thread, some preparing a morning repast for after the battle. The peaceful morning sounds of birds calling and the warm breeze blowing through the trees that surround the field is shattered with the cry of, “Lay on!” The battle begins and armored bodies rush each other to try to get in the killing blow. The sound of rattan swords ringing off of armored bodies fills the air. A bard’s voice suddenly joins the din as his heart fills him with the need to recount other historic battles to help inspire his comrades on the field.

With the growing concern over the spread of aquatic invasive species to Wisconsin’s inland lakes, many lake association members and other concerned citizens are looking for ways to get involved. The Clean Boats, Clean Waters volunteer watercraft inspection program is an opportunity to take a front line defense against the spread of aquatic invasive species.

Through the Clean Boats, Clean Waters program, volunteers are trained to organize and conduct a boater education program in their community. Adults and youth teams educate boaters on how and where invasive species are most likely to hitch a ride into water bodies. Volunteers perform boat and trailer checks for invasive species, distribute informational brochures and collect and report any new water body infestations.

Fremont- Wolf River Fire Department is holding their annual Pancake Breakfast. Featuring Buttermilk & Homemade Potato Pancakes. Also included with the pancakes is sausages, scrambled eggs. To drink we have Coffee, Milk, and Juice. Please come and join us as the proceeds go to the Fremont Wolf River Fire Department for equipment.

The public is welcome to attend a Memorial Day Remembrance Program to be held at Fort Howard Memorial Park located at 1350 N. Military Avenue. The program will take place near the Veteran’s Field of Honor on Monday, May 28, 2012 at 11:00 A.M.

This event is being held to inform retirees about state issues and program changes that have adversely affected seniors. The event is sponsored by WARA.

Zebra Mussels are one of the most recognizable Aquatic Invasive Species in the Great Lakes. From clogging up industrial pipes to cutting the feet of unsuspecting beachgoers with their razor sharp shells, these small invaders cause big problems. As they continue to spread from the Great Lakes to inland waters, there is concern about the impacts non-native mussels may have on ecosystems, fish populations, and people living on lakes and rivers.

At this meeting you will learn:
• The biology of both, non-native Zebra Mussels and Native Mussels
• Impacts Zebra Mussels have on lakes and rivers in the Menominee River watershed
• How Keyes Lake in Florence County responded to Zebra Mussel introduction
• Ways to prevent Zebra Mussels from spreading to and infesting other inland waters
