Eat Well, Play Well, a special exhibit running April 7 to Sept. 9 at The Building for Kids Children’s Museum, encourages healthy living by teaching the science of making healthy food choices and helping children and adults discover there are many fun and interesting ways to stay active. Visitors will discover through interactive exhibits what an appropriate serving size looks like, see firsthand what it takes to burn off calories, test their flexibility and balance, review the latest clinical research and realize they can reduce their risk of disease with healthy choices

Step into a comical world of 1950's pop culture with Ricky Bernstein's Kitchen Dreams. Using glass, aluminum and childhood memories, artist Ricky Bernstein pieces together everyday life through a caricature of social roles and cultural icons. Bernstein;s life-sized collages animate a bold, bright, somewhat surreal world, bound to bring you a good belly laugh.

Progressive Appleton: Through the Lens of W.D. Schlafer

What was Appleton like during the Progressive Era (1850 – 1920)? The turn of the century was a period of speculation and excitement. Americans felt the excitement of world fairs and new technologies entering their daily lives. This new exhibit at the History Museum hinges on Appleton’s evolution from a fledgling manufacturing town to a modern industrial center. Through a collection of 3,000 photographs, amateur photographer W.D. Schlafer captured this rapidly changing environment during the Progressive Era in the Fox Cities. Visitors will see how much Appleton and the Fox Cities evolved as new technologies and ideas changed the lives of area residents during this transformative period.

This project is sponcered by Beacon House, Inc., a non-profit, volunteer sustained resourse center in Green Bay whose mission is to support the life changing process of healing. Event is free. Food Addicts Anonymous is an organization that believes that Food Addiction is a biochemical disorder that occurs at a cellular level and therefore cannot be cured by willpower or by therapy alone. We feel that food addiction is not a moral or character issue. This Twelve Step program believes that food addiction can be managed by abstaining from (eliminating) addictive foods, following a program of sound nutrition (a food plan), and working the Twelve Steps of the program. After we have gone through a process of withdrawal from addictive foods many of us have experienced miraculous life-style changes. There are no dues or fees required for membership, but only a desire to stop eating addictive foods.

Join Land & Water Conservation Division staff on an evening hike to learn about the interesting lives of our native frogs in the Peshtigo Harbor Wildlife Area. Hear frog songs and learn to identify them and learn about native frog species, frogs as ecological indicators, and other frog lore. The hike is about 2.5 miles and insect/tick repellent is recommended. Free public program. For more information, call 715-732-7780.

To get to Hemlock Curve Nature Trail, take the Peshtigo Exit from Highway 41. Once on Business 41 in Peshtigo, go south on West Front Street (first street west of the bridge). This street eventually turns into Hale Road outside the city limits. After a few miles, turn left onto Harbor Road and then left onto Badger Road (watch for brown signs). Parking is limited.

CITIZENSFIRST AIDS HABITAT RECYCLING EFFORT

OSHKOSH, Wisconsin (April 20, 2011) – For the second year in a row, CitizensFirst will partner with Habitat for Humanity in what has become one of Fond du Lac’s biggest recycling events. A service offered free of charge, it’s one more way CitizensFirst is helping Habitat build a better tomorrow.

Entitled “Fond du Lac Recycle Day,” the event takes place Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the CitizensFirst branch at 1045 E. Johnson St., Fond du Lac. During these hours participants can bring in up to three boxes of documents to be shredded at no cost by Automated Records Management Systems Inc. A free will donation for the service will go help fund the Habitat program in Fond du Lac.

Outdated televisions, microwaves, video players, computers and stereos will similarly be collected to benefit the Habitat for Humanity ReStore of Fond du Lac County. The ReStore will also accept drop offs of new or gently used building equipment and materials.

On behalf of the Buckholz-Klein family, we are pleased to "Pay It Forward" and are holding a benefit in their honor on May 5th, 2012 from Noon-Midnight at City Inn in Berlin, WI. The benefit will include children's games, prizes, raffles, an auction and the live band, Bo...ogie and the YoYo'z!

On September 4, 2011 – Devlin Klein was tragically killed in an automobile accident. Devlin had just begun his senior year at Berlin High School and had aspirations to attend Fox Valley Technical College following graduation. At a time of such peril, Devlin’s mother and stepfather were preparing to introduce their newest member to the family. Shannon, Devlin’s mother, was induced in order to birth her youngest son in time to make funeral arrangements for Devlin. Ryan Buckholz was born on September 6, 2011 – just two days after his eldest brother became an angel. Unfortunately, just 26 short days after Ryan entered the world, tragedy struck again. His mother and father noticed him struggling to breathe and immediately took him to the Berlin Memorial Hospital. Within hours, he was flown to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee. Ryan was diagnosed with Cor Triatriatum, a heart with three atria. Cor Triatriatum is a rare congenital cardiac anomaly, in which the left or right atrium is divided in two by a membrane. In an effort to save Ryan’s life, surgeons performed open-heart surgery, their only option. After 24 days in the NICU, Ryan was released to be home with his family. Due to an emergency surgery and a less than perfect recovery, Ryan must receive shots and medications on a daily basis. A blood clot still exists within Ryan’s defenseless body and he struggles with each and every breath he takes, due to having a paralyzed diaphragm. While mourning the loss of her oldest son and nurturing the life of her youngest, Shannon found herself entering her own battle. Shortly after bringing Ryan home from the hospital, Shannon had a thyroidectomy performed as she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Shannon started radiation therapy on December 15, 2011. During her treatment, she is to be isolated and cannot have any direct contact with her children and family. Shannon will also need to maintain a medication regimen for the remainder of her life. The family has found themselves in a nightmarish reality. Unable to work full-time, as they must attend to not only their children, but Shannon’s health, they no longer have health insurance coverage or a steady income. If there’s ever been a family who lives by the motto, “Pay It Forward”, it’s this family. The Buckholz-Klein family consists of Paul and Shannon (Longsine) Buckholz and their children, Devlin and Louden Klein and William, Adam and Ryan Buckholz.

The three make their way to Paris and eventually to Marseille, hoping to sail to a safe port.

The Peninsula Singers Spring Concert

The Peninsula Singers, a Door County choral ensemble, will present their annual spring concert Songs of Heart and Home at two venues this Mother's Day weekend. One concert will be presented on Saturday, May 12, at 7:00 p.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay and the second on Sunday, May 13, at 3:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Sister Bay.

Artistic Director Merle Colburn has assembled a range of music to showcase the skills of the sixty-plus voice choir. The first half of the concert will feature the "Requiem", with solos by Challoner Brown, vocal; Lori Meyer, cello; Nathan Hermus, oboe, Don Carlson, saxophone, and Pamela Johnson, flute.

The second half will be a lighter program, opening with "Lux Arumque" led by Assistant Director Lauren Gilmore. Other numbers include "Unchained Melody", "Down By the Riverside”, "A Chorus Line", and selections by accompanist David Beck. The New Day Singers, ambassadors for The Peninsula Singers, will also perform. The concert will conclude with two familiar songs: "Homeward Bound" and "Operator” with soloists Kurt Colburn and Ann Birnschein, respectively.

The Peninsula Singers continue to offer concerts as a gift to the community. However, a donation of $10.00 per person at the door is suggested to help defray expenses.

They are invited by the 'Lost Neighborhood' memorial project, part of which is the reconstruction of the façade of a synagogue destroyed 60 years ago. Football includes a mixture of artifacts, text, video and hands-on activities with something for everyone! See how you hold up to a lineman by measuring your strength with the “Grip Tester.” Think you're fast enough to out-run the defense? Then bring your running shoes to the Sprint Track. Football covers everything from the history of the sport, to the equipment, to the cutting edge medical technology used to treat common injuries. You’ll also discover key concepts like collisions, peripheral vision, and balance, too. So what are you waiting for? Put your helmet on, get in there and score a touchdown at Football!
Football the Exhibit is presented by the Green Bay Packers with additional support from Associated Bank, Prevea Sports Medicine and NBC 26. Football has been developed by the Museum of Discovery, Little Rock, Arkansas.

Clean Boats Clean Waters Training

With the growing concern over the spread of aquatic invasive species to Wisconsin’s inland lakes, many lake association members and other concerned citizens are looking for ways to get involved. The Clean Boats, Clean Waters volunteer watercraft inspection program is an opportunity to take a front line defense against the spread of aquatic invasive species.

Through the Clean Boats, Clean Waters program, volunteers are trained to organize and conduct a boater education program in their community. Adults and youth teams educate boaters on how and where invasive species are most likely to hitch a ride into water bodies. Volunteers perform boat and trailer checks for invasive species, distribute informational brochures and collect and report any new water body infestations.

We will have vendors and crafters, a brat fry, silent auctions, raffles, info on dog agility, a DJ as well as a wonderfully scenic two mile or five mile pet walk!

AMVETS Post 99 Memorial Day Picnic in the Park, Monday May 28 at 4310 Conroe St. Manitowoc. Music begins at 10:30 with Steve "Schnidrr" Thuss. At noon there will be a flag raising and inspirational ceremony, hosted by John Maino, from WIXX, as MC. The Charlie Bucket Band will play from 1:30 - 5:30. Something for the whole family to enjoy.
